TRANSNASAL ESOPHAGOSCOPY (TNE) AND GASTROSCOPY

WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE?

Transnasal Esophagoscopy and Gastroscopy is a test performed in the office. Dr. Komray uses a very thin (5. 1mm) flexible viewing tube which is passed through your nose and down the back of your throat into your esophagus (the food tube that goes from your mouth to your stomach.) This test is done to evaluate problems with your voice, swallowing difficulties, chronic cough, heartburn and other symptoms. During this procedure, small tissue samples (biopsies) might be taken of any areas in your esophagus or stomach that require closer examination.

GETTING READY FOR THE PROCEDURE

  • Do not eat or drink for 3 hours prior to the procedure. You may take a small sip of water if needed to take a medication.
  • Tell the staff if you have any allergies to lidocaine, cetacaine, or other medications which end with “caine.”
  • Tell the staff is you are taking any blood thinners (warfarin or coumadin) we will contact your primary physician to determine if this drug could be stopped for 5 days prior to this procedure.... IF YOU DO NOT TELL US THAT YOU ARE TAKING THESE DRUGS, SEVERE BLEEDING PROBLEMS COULD OCCUR.
  • For 5 days, prior to this procedure, do not take aspirin or medicines containing aspirin (Excedrin) or any anti inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen, Advil, Motrin, Naprosyn, etc.) You MAY take acetaminophen (Tylenol.)
  • If you are a diabetic, you may need to adjust your dose of insulin. Please inform the staff and we will work with your primary physician to calculate the correct dose for you.

THE EXAM

The procedure will be done in our Muskegon office. It will take about 30 minutes and is usually well tolerated with minimal discomfort. You will be seated or in a semi-reclining position. Dr. Komray will numb your nose and throat with a numbing spray before passing a small tube through your nose and esophagus. You will be asked to swallow. During this exam, you may feel the need to burp as small puffs of air are used to inflate your esophagus.

AFTER THE EXAM

PLEASE BRING SOMEONE WITH YOU TO DRIVE YOU HOME

  • You will be alert and should not have any pain although you may notice some minor discomfort of your nose and throat for a few hours after the procedure.
  • Do not eat or drink anything for at least 1 hour after the examination.
  • You may resume taking your blood thinner medications as directed by Dr. Komray or your primary physician.
  • Do not take any aspirin or anti inflammatory medications for 2 days following the procedure.
